Did you know that the belt and clutch go hand-in-hand? You can’t have great clutch performance without the right type of belt on your Snowdog. Here’s five tips from our friends at Dayco to ensure proper performance so you get the most out of your belt and clutch system:

  1. Don’t skip belt break-in: When replacing your ride’s belt, remember that it needs to go through two-heat cycles during break-in to ensure the best performance and longest life. We recommend running a newly installed belt for 25-50 miles with varying throttle speeds under half throttle. Also, allow the belt and machine to completely cool between heat cycles.
  2. Check belt alignment: Keep in mind that belt alignment can impact belt life so verify that the primary and secondary sheaves are perfectly in-line with each other.
  3. Use a temperature gauge: Whether OE or aftermarket, a gauge immediately alerts you if the belt is too hot. Safe operating temps are under 190°. Proceed with caution between 200°-210°. And be prepared for belt failure of temperatures are over 220°. We suggest varying speeds and loads until things cool down.
  4. Clean the clutch faces: Use a Scotch-Brite® pad or similar to scrub and remove any contaminants that are stuck to the sheave faces. Then use a rag and acetone to wipe the sheaves.
