Snowdog Towing: How Much Weight Can a Snowdog pull?

Snowdog claims that the Snowdog Sport (and even previous models including the Compact, Standard and Utility versions) can tow up to 1,000 lbs, and we were curious to see if it could really walk the walk. So, we put it to the test in all sorts of conditions to see what it could actually pull!

We tested a Snowdog Sport B13MER model with a 13.5hp Briggs engine.

Check out our video and additional analysis & tips below!

The Mad Scientist Setup

We didn't hold back - we hooked up an extra sled, a 55 gallon water barrel (weighing in at a solid 500lbs), and even a brave buddy (who tipped the scales at a modest 200 lbs) to see how much the Snowdog could actually handle. When you add the driver, at 245 lbs, two sleds at 30 lbs each, everything behind the hitch weighed in at 1,005 lbs.  We tested it on a road with no snow (just hard pack snow and some gravel), and on a lake that had about 8 inches of snow cover, and even dared to take it up and down a boat ramp with a decent incline.

The Results? Color Us Impressed!

The Snowdog towed everything we threw at it, even up that steep boat ramp! We were seriously impressed with its power and ability to handle heavy loads, and even its ability to stop and start with all that cargo.

The only time the Snowdog had any trouble was at the very top of the boat ramp incline where it bogged down, and the track started to dig in. The solution was pretty easy though: get out and walk it up, or use the “one leg to push” method. While we may not have been traveling at top speed on flat ground (or through the snow), the Snowdog seemed quite capable.  At full throttle, it did manage some impressive speeds on the flats.

What This Means for You

If you need a snow machine that can pull some serious weight, the Snowdog is a great option! It's a beast, and it can tackle even the toughest jobs with ease.  Not sure what heavy things you might move with your Snowdog?  We have some ideas!

  • Hauling wood

  • Moving your fishing shack

  • Sleigh rides for your kids and all of their friends

  • Retrieving the deer or moose on a hunting trip

  • Taking a friend out on Trail Grooming day (they’re just added weight to help with compaction, but you tell them you want their company)

  • Shuttling your gear to and from camp.

Pro Tips for Towing with Your Snowdog

  • Make sure your sled or trailer is hooked up properly to the Snowdog.

  • Spread the weight out evenly on the sled or trailer.

  • Don't be a hero - don't tow more than the Snowdog's limit.

  • Take it easy on hills and slippery surfaces.

  • When pulling more than one trailer on ice or in slippery conditions, use skate kits on the sleds.

  • Slow down (or stop) when you need to check your cargo.  You’ll thank us later.

  • If the machine is bogging down with the weight, hop out and walk beside the dog

Follow these tips, and you'll be towing heavy loads with your Snowdog like a pro!
